Skin Grafts are surgical method in which skin is grafted to the area where there is no skin or if the skin has some de-formalities etc. Grafted skin is taken from another part of the body, and this part is called Donor site. The grafting is done in anaesthetic conditions and it is grafted using staples, stitches, or surgical glue.

The doctors will stitch the donor site also for avoiding infection. The both parts will get healed within 2 weeks maximum.

Skin Grafts can be done in three different ways,
  • Pinch Grafts
  • Split-Thickness grafts
  • Full-Thickness grafts

Pinch Grafts:-These are little pinches of your own skin taken from an area on your outer thigh under local anaesthetic and planted into the affected area.

Split-Thickness grafts:-Split thickness skin graft uses the epidermis and small, varying amounts of dermis layers of the skin for grafting.

Full-Thickness grafts:-Full thickness skin graft uses all of the epidermis and all of the dermis (deeper) layers of the skin for grafting.

Flap Cover Surgery is a process in which the skin is grafted from the donor site to the affected area. It is similar to Skin Grafts but it is different. In skin grafts there are no intact blood vessels, it relies on the new blood vessels to grow, but in Flap surgery blood vessels are kept intact and blood flow occurs after surgery.

Flaps can be fundamentally classifieds into 3 according to the complexity,
  • Local     Flaps
  • Regional     Flaps
  • Distant     Flaps

Local Flaps:-In Local flaps a thin layer of tissue is taken and stretched to fill the defect. This type of flaps is less complex.

Regional Flaps:-This interpolation flaps are not exactly matched with the affected area. This freed tissue or island is kept above or underneath the normal skin for reaching the affected skin.

Distant Flaps:- Distant flaps are used when the donor site is far from the affected area. This is very complex mechanism, where tubed flaps will be connected from the donor site to recipient site forming a bridge.

Burns are unexpected events that can cause severe damages to our skin. It can be severe or mild. The post burn reconstruction is also classified as two types,
  • Acute
  • Reconstructive

Acute:-Acute burn care is done immediately after the injury occurs, it is done by a team of Trauma Surgeons or general surgeons.

Reconstructive:- Reconstructive burn care is done after the injury heals. For this surgery we need to consult plastic surgeons. Reconstructive burn care is to reconstruct the skin for improving the functions and cosmetic appearance. Reconstruction of the skin may take several years according to the injury.
